After winning their second straight Big Ten indoor track and field title earlier this month, the Gopher women's track team will head to Arkansas to compete in the NCAA Indoor championships.
The event will be held starting at noon today and Saturday.
Five athletes and a relay team will represent the Gophers at the tournament, who have a legitimate chance at a top-10 finish. Their best finish to date was last season, when they came in 12th.
Among those five athletes are All-Americans Liz Roehrig, Heather Dorniden and Jamie Cheever. At the Big Ten Championships, Roerhrig became the first Minnesota athlete in any sport to win four consecutive Big Ten titles in the same event, winning her fourth pentathlon with a total score of 4,210 points.
The men also travel to Arkansas the same weekend to compete.
Sprinter Ibrahim Kabia was the only Minnesota athlete to qualify for the men's championship. He is looking for his second consecutive All-American honor after breaking a school record in the event last year.
Momentum in their favor
After a record-breaking performance last weekend, the Minnesota women's golf team will attempt to build upon its success this weekend in the Golden State.
The Gophers begin play Sunday at the Diablo Grande Invitational, hosted by Drake University. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Diablo Grande Ranch in Patterson, Calif.
Last weekend in Arizona, Minnesota broke the school 54-hole tournament scoring record with an 894, bettering the previous mark by eight strokes.
Men head to Georgia
Things certainly aren't getting any easier for the Minnesota men's golf team.
The Gophers will face another star-studded field in Georgia this weekend at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Country Club. The 54-hole tournament runs today through Sunday.
Despite yet another field ripe with top talent, Minnesota will try to improve on its first two results of the spring, a 14th place finish in Puerto Rico and a 13th in Las Vegas.
The Gophers' Sunday in Las Vegas indicates they may be able to do just that, however.
Minnesota tied tournament champion UNLV and second-place Charlotte for the lowest team total in the final round.
