Former Lt. Chuck Miner beat out two other candidates to fill the University Police Department’s deputy chief position, which has been open for four months.

Hestness said preparations for both the Republican National Convention and the beginning of fall semester forced the UMPD to put the appointment on the back burner.

The position opened on April 30 when Deputy Chief Steve Johnson retired after 29 years of service in the UMPD.

Police Chief Greg Hestness chose Miner over the other finalist — Minneapolis Police Lt. Medaria Arradondo.

The nine original candidates for Johnson’s position boiled down to the final three after interviews with Hestness and Vice Provost of Student Affairs Jerry Rinehart.
