In light of the current economic crisis, what needs to happen to ensure American economic stability in the future?

We have to restore confidence in our banking and lending practices. With some of the activity going on, it’s just come back to roost and it’s coming to haunt us, because it all started with unethical practice. These are problems that we have created with improper lending practices.

Can the United States achieve energy independence? If so, what steps do we need to take for that to happen, and how long do you think it will take?

I do believe that we can make a huge advance if we use all of the resources that are available: wind, solar, nuclear, electric cars and if we show the world we are serious, then we can finally make a difference. This is important not only for financial independence but for security issues, as well.

With tuition costs rising, what, if anything, would you do to make college more affordable?

I do believe that education has become big business. We need to make sure education and students are the main goal, and we have to make it affordable. Instead of K-12 education, I would like to propose that we concentrate on reading, writing, math and science for the first 10 years, and then use the final two years to prepare for college, trade schools or other fields. That way everybody has that opportunity.

What is your stance on gay marriage?

I am not a proponent of gay marriage, but I do believe in civil unions. I want to respect the sanctity of marriage, but all partners should have the same rights and benefits.

What is your stance on abortion?

I am Catholic and pro-life.

What, if anything, would you change about the health care system?

I would make sure that all people have access to all plans available, whether they are individual or employer sponsored. Nobody should be discriminated against with a pre-existing condition. I support a blend of private and government sponsored programs, so people have competition of options.

How should the United States address the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

We have to make sure we finish the job. Leave the decision of how and when to exit to the generals on the ground. I respect their insight and decisions. I don’t believe in a certain timetable, but I do believe we need to get out. I leave that to our military and the Iraqi government. I do believe our resources need to be moved to Afghanistan.

What is the most important issue our country must deal with today, and how do you plan to address it?

I think the most important issue is the economic crisis, because it is affecting everyone. We have to clean up Washington. There is too much lobbying and special interests. We have to restore ethics, morals and behaviors. I think I’m the only candidate in the country that is not accepting financial contributions from anyone, not even individuals. I want people to pay money on their debt, spend it on their families or donate to their favorite local charity.
