More charges against alleged campus groper

The man charged in a series of sexual assaults on the University of Minnesota campus has been charged with seven more counts of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct. Phillip William Acosta, 41, was arrested by University police on Feb. 3 and originally charged with two counts, according to a previous complaint. Police were aware of all nine assaults, but first charged Acosta with two counts of criminal sexual conduct to keep him in custody while strengthening the case against him, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. Freeman said they have now filed charges for all offenses of which the police department is aware. Acosta has admitted to all nine counts. All are gross misdemeanors and carry a maximum sentence of one year in prison. Freeman said due to the number of incidents, Acosta could possibly face four years in prison. These charges were filed as Freeman prepares to move forward with his case against Acosta. The incidents occurred in the morning or late afternoon and the majority of the victims were approached while Acosta rode a bicycle. As FreemanâÄôs office moves forward with the pretrial, he said they are going to have a medical specialist perform psychiatric work on Acosta. Freeman said AcostaâÄôs record prior to the incidents show nothing that would suggest he was at risk for committing these crimes. Through the psychiatric work, Freeman hopes to learn why Acosta committed the sexual assaults to see if there is a way to help Acosta and prevent him from committing these crimes again. âÄúThrowing everyone in the clink and throwing away the key is not always the answer,âÄù Freeman said.
