Dairy producer issues

A local dairy company has recalled about 50 milk products over the weekend because of possible contamination with the listeria bacterium.

The recalled products include several items from Land O' Lakes, Kemps, Kohler Mix Specialities, Muller Pinehurst and Roundy's.

All of the recalled products were sold in 10 oz., half-pint, pint or quart sizes. Gallon and half-gallon containers were not affected by the recall.

Kohler Mix Specialties, the local dairy production company, is advising customers not to use the products, which should be returned for a refund.

There have been no reported illnesses linked to the contaminated milk, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Recalls from Land O' Lakes include: whole, skim and chocolate milk, 1 and 2 percent milk, half and half, whipping cream, egg nog and raspberry and amaretto creme gourmet dairy drink.

Recalls from Kemps include: Dairy Good lactose-reduced lowfat 1 and 2 percent milk, heavy whipping cream, half and half, and Swiss style chocolate lowfat milk.

The products were distributed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana.

Kohler issued the first recall on Tuesday for its Land O' Lakes 10-ounce cartons of 2 percent milk dated Feb. 10 and Feb. 11. On Saturday, the company issued a second recall involving several brands of products made at Kohler's White Bear Lake, Minn., plant.

The listeria bacterium poses a greater risk for the young and elderly, and for those with weakened immune systems, said Craig Hedberg, supervisor of the foodborne, vectorborne and zoonotic diseases unit at the Minnesota Department of Health.
