The Gophers men's hockey team announced Monday the signing of Matt DeMarchi of Bemidji, Minn., to a national letter of intent to play for Minnesota beginning next season.

DeMarchi is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound defenseman. He played with the North Iowa Huskies of the United States Hockey League for the past two seasons. DeMarchi scored four goals and had 14 assists in 53 games last season.

"Matt is a young player with good size and tremendous potential," Gophers coach Don Lucia said. "He will be fun to work with because he is very coachable and is a hardworking player."
