A jubilant shout went out in the club room last Sunday among the Minnesota softball team at the Sports Pavilion when the Big Ten champions learned Sunday night that they will travel to Los Angeles for the NCAA regional championships.

The Gophers will begin play in Region 1 and begin the double-elimination tournament on Thursday at 5 p.m. Twin Cities time against Creighton.

"We couldn't be in a better position," sophomore Morgan Holden said. "We proved something to ourselves this weekend and we're ready for whatever we're faced with."

A few players and coaches have California ties. Sophomore Angel Braden and junior Michelle Harrison are from the Los Angeles area, Shannon Beeler was recruited heavily by UCLA and co-coach Julie Standering grew up there.

"We love the opportunity to go," Standering said. "This team is ready to play anywhere."
