U professor hit by car while riding his bicycle

University of Minnesota economics instructor Lei Guo was hit by a car at approximately 8:40 a.m. Thursday morning while riding his bicycle at the intersection of 19th Avenue SE and 2nd Street S.
Guo was not wearing a helmet and the driver hit him while attempting to turn right on a red light, Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said.
Guo, 29, said he was at the University Medical Center for about four hours after the accident, leaving at about 12:30 p.m.
“I’m still having some pains in my back and my neck,” Guo said, adding that he is feeling much better than he did on Thursday.
According to citizen responder Richard Ridenour , Guo said he could not feel his legs immediately after the collision. Guo told Ridenour he was on his way to teach a class at Willey Hall .
Ridenour, 19, had received American Red Cross first aid and CPR training the night before the accident, and was on his way to an internship at Mesaba Airlines in Eagan when he saw the accident happen.
Ridenour said he made sure the instructor’s back stayed straight until the paramedics arrived, as he ascertained that Guo had sustained a back injury.
“The car ended up hitting him pretty full speed,” Ridenour said of the accident. “The guy flew off his bike, hit the ground [and] hit his head.”
Ridenour said he will be forever indebted to the Red Cross for the training he received at such an opportune time. “This was a life-changing moment for me,” he said.
