Dieter leaving the Gophers

The junior was among the statistical leaders in multiple categories this season.

Junior Brook Dieter has chosen to leave the Minnesota volleyball team, according to a Tuesday press release. Dieter played outside hitter for the Gophers. She was the statistical leader with 252 kills on the season, averaging 3.94 kills per set. She also averaged 2.47 digs per set and 0.64 blocks per set. “We’ll miss Brook,” Gophers head coach Mike Hebert said in the release. “She is a great athlete who has contributed in so many ways to our program. We wish her the best as she moves forward with her life.” Dieter and the team were unavailable for further comment Tuesday night. Dieter was held out of Saturday’s game against Northwestern with no injury reported. She last played Friday night in a losing effort against Illinois in which she led the team with 13 kills to go along with nine digs and two assists . Dieter sitting out did not create much of a stir with the Wildcats being one of the lower caliber teams in the Big Ten, giving numerous possibilities as to why Dieter did not play. Expectations were that Dieter may have had a nagging injury or the coaching staff simply wanted to give her a match off in the middle of the season to keep fresh; however, Hebert had a different reaction. âÄúUsually the reason people play is because theyâÄôve earned playing time and thatâÄôs what happened in this case,âÄù he said after the Northwestern match. Following the 2008 season, Dieter was named to the second-team All-America and first-team All-Big Ten . She was also a unanimous selection to the 2009 preseason All-Big Ten team.
