Lions' Horton takes over as offensive coordinator

Two days after former offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch left the University of Minnesota for the Seattle Seahawks , the Gophers plucked his replacement from the NFL ranks.
The University announced Jeff Horton as its next offensive guru Friday. Horton has spent the past four seasons in the NFL, most recently as quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions.
“I’m thrilled to have Jeff Horton join our staff,” head coach Tim Brewster said in a statement. “He brings tremendous leadership and experience running offenses and coaching quarterbacks.”
With the signing, Horton becomes the University’s third offensive coordinator in the last three seasons.
Horton started his coaching career with the Gophers in 1984 as a graduate assistant. During his 22 years of collegiate coaching, Horton had two stints as a head coach, at the University of Nevada -Reno in 1993 and at University of Nevada-Las Vegas from 1994-1998.
Horton was the quarterbacks coach at the University of Wisconsin from 1999-2005, where he worked with Kevin Cosgrove, Ronnie Lee, Tim Davis and Thomas Hammock , all members of the Gophers’ current coaching staff.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity Coach Brewster is giving me here at Minnesota,” Horton said in a statement. “I started my college coaching career here 26 years ago. I’m coming back to a great city, a great university and a program that is really starting to take off. I’m proud to be a part of it.”
