“I love pancakes, man. Who doesn’t love pancakes? After a night of drinking, my friends and I go straight to IHOP in the morning,” says filmmaker Tom Kirlin of his Los Angeles underground art show coming to Minneapolis on Friday. The now-traveling art show boasts over 30 local artists, photographers and fashion designers brave enough to submit art to hang among inebriated twenty-somethings.
Kirlin works as a documentary film maker who splits his time between L.A. and Bangkok . His successful party/gallery opening began in a warehouse in L.A., which he uses to shoot music videos and rents out to other cinema aficionados. “I really wanted to open a restaurant, but I don’t know the first thing about running a restaurant, so I decided to make it an art show.”
To take his show national, Kirlin put out advertisements weeks ago through local art venues, but got most of his submissions via mnartists.org and craigslist ads. The advertisements were fairly straight-forward, simply reading “UNDERGROUND ART VENUE IS NOW ACCEPTING ART & PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMISSIONS FOR the PANCAKES & BOOZE ART SHOW (Now [in] Minneapolis)!!!”
The show keeps its underground quality while on the road, not releasing the list of artists to the public beforehand. To know who made the cut of the 30-ish local artists, writers and fashion designers on display, you’ll have to grace the show or wait at home until photos hit the blogosphere.
Remember for just five bucks, patrons can gorge themselves on all of the pancakes in sight. As if unlimited binging on the best breakfast food wasn’t enough, the event has an open bar and live music. Dirty martini and indie kid rock with those flapjacks, sire? Why yes, thank you.
