Keep track, sports writers

Now, I realize that the reviews of the Gophers menâÄôs track and field team meets arenâÄôt exactly page-turners to the general public. ItâÄôs not a revenue sport and, largely, your readers donâÄôt know Minnesota has a track and field team. That said, the horrible omission over the weekend was noteworthy. Ben Blankenship from Stillwater ran a ridiculous 3:57.87 mile at the Washington Qualifier over the weekend, breaking the school record by almost five seconds. I donâÄôt expect the Minnesota Open to be front-page news, but a sub-4-minute mile is significant enough to make The Minnesota Daily. Every American teenager has been forced to run the mile and can easily relate to the accomplishment. In three pages of sports news, not even one line made the edition. Would a Gophers baseball perfect game, a perfect 10 in gymnastics, a hole-in-one or MarQueis Gray not fumbling make the paper? I would hope so. I would also hope a broader range of significant sports topics find coverage in the future. Mike Linnemann University graduate student
