Gophers football player arrested

Gary Tinsley was arrested Sunday for allegedly fleeing from police on a mo-ped.

Minneapolis police arrested University of Minnesota football player Gary Tinsley early Sunday on several charges, including driving while intoxicated. Officers on patrol first noticed the 20-year-old sophomore Gophers linebacker and another individual near 11th Avenue Southeast and Sixth Street Southeast driving their mo-peds in the wrong direction on a one-way street, according to the report. When police began the pursuit, the two individuals fled on their mo-peds down sidewalks and through yards. The incident ended in TinsleyâÄôs arrest for fleeing officers on foot, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, according to the police report. Tinsley refused a sobriety test once apprehended, according to the report. When he was read the implied consent law, he claimed to not understand it. A blood test was later taken. Tinsley was admitted to the Hennepin County jail at 3:16 a.m. Sunday, according to jail records. According to Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia, Tinsley did not call a lawyer upon apprehension. Rather, he called both his mother and his coaches. It is unclear how long Tinsley will remain in custody, Garcia said. No other arrests were made, according to the police report. Tinsley was previously linked to a Sept. 27 Dinkytown brawl. According to a police report, during the September incident Tinsley was seen swinging a wood board before fleeing the scene. Tinsley was cited by University police for fleeing from police on foot and underage consumption of alcohol âÄî both misdemeanors. The University Director of Athletic Communications Garry Bowman said that while the athletics department is aware of the incident, they are not prepared to make a comment at this time.
