Thursday

Music — Cadence Hip-Hop Series

An evening of Minneapolis hip-hop big shots Sims, Toki Wright and DJ Plain Ole Bill will be demonstrating their talents in the unlikely venue of the Guthrie Theater. It’s a Rhymesayers evening in a posh setting.

Guthrie Theater
818 Second St. S
7:30 p.m.
$15

Music — Quiet, Please, Low

The first of the Varsity’s new series of quieter, more intimate shows, Duluth-based group Low has a sparse and, well, quiet sound that fits nicely with the concept. Reminiscent of VH1’s Storytellers, if you want to not just hear the artist but also have a desire to get to know them, this is for you.

Varsity Theater
1308 Fourth St. SE
7:30 p.m.
$14

Friday

Music — Taylor Swift

After basically obtaining every award there is to win, Taylor Swift is certainly a big deal. Whether you love her or hate her, this will certainly be sold out. Openers feature Kellie Pickler and Gloriana.

Xcel Energy Center
199 Kellogg Blvd. W
7 p.m.
$27 - $61.50

Music — Jerry Messersmith and The Mynabirds

Minneapolis tunesmith Jeremy Messersmith is one of A&E’s golden children. The release of “The Reluctant Graveyard” finds his philosophical folk reaching an even higher level of hype.

Cedar Cultural Center
416 Cedar Ave. S
7 p.m.
$10/$12

Saturday

Music — Dada Trash Collage CD release party

Biting with the force of a dog pit, this Icelandic, oboe-based 10-person collective shoegazes with the best of them. Simply put, it’s giraffe stilt inferno music. Just kidding! Read Jay Boller’s article this week to find out the truth.

7th Street Entry
701 First Ave. N
9 p.m.
$7

Comedy — “Before Tokyo: The Comedies of Bill Murray: Ghostbusters”

Back before Bill Murray was quirky and serious, he was funny! “Ghostbusters” is referenced about as often as Jesus, so if you haven’t seen this film, get to it.

The Trylon
3258 Minnehaha Ave.
7 and 9 p.m.
$8

Sunday

Music — Afroman

We would have gone to this show, but we got high.

The Rock
2029 Woodlynn Ave.
8:30 p.m.
$10/15

Comedy — Improv A Go-Go

The best improv comedy you can get for the price of anything on Mickey D’s dollar menu. This show is almost entirely publicized by word of mouth and often hosts some of the funniest people in town. Their short and long form is always spot on.

Brave New Workshop
2605 Hennepin Ave.
8 p.m.
$1
