Cable does not equal connected

I think it’s wrong for the University to mandate a charge of $8 more per month for cable service that some students may not necessarily want and that no student really needs. In an academic institution sporting some of the most robust curricula in the nation, it seems ridiculous to add yet another distraction to the long list already present in the average student’s life and at an additional cost to their already shallow coffers.
In response to a student whose quote was featured in the Sept. 9 issue of the Daily: I find it strange that at an institution with some of the fastest Internet in the state, student groups for just about every activity imaginable, a location near the center of a bustling metropolitan area and a repertoire of bus routes, a student would need cable television to “feel connected.”
These are the years when we form many of the habits which will stay with us for the rest of our lives. We should be encouraged to fill our lives with diverse activities that ignite our interests, not with a chair, a remote control and force-fed entertainment.
