In response to Darlene Huang’s recent letter to the editor and Erin Lengas’ column about banning smoking on campus, I would like to say that smoking is our choice, and we do not intentionally try to blow smoke in other students’ faces. In fact, I go out of my way to get away from the nonsmokers who write these letters. Yes, we smokers are aware of the health dangers, but I personally love smoking and so do many of my smoker friends. So, just like religious or pro-life activists and advocates, please don’t force your beliefs on smokers who enjoy the habit. With a university of this size, a tobacco-free policy will be nearly impossible to control. Think about it — the population of the university is the same as that of the city of Duluth, Minn. Try controlling that. Instead, the University should focus on more important issues such as on-campus crime and rising tuition.
