The Gophers men's and women's tennis teams saw their seasons end Friday in the first round of the NCAA tournament with losses to higher-ranked opponents.
The men fell 4-2 to No. 20 Tulsa in Norman, Okla., while the women fell 4-1 to No. 28 Arizona in Chapel Hill, N.C. Both Gophers teams were ranked 35th nationally.
Senior Phillip Arndt and freshman Jack Hamburg won for the men in singles to even the match at 2-2. Then freshman Leandro Toledo and senior Julian Dehn each lost in third sets to clinch the match for the Golden Hurricanes.
Magdalena Wiecha posted the lone victory for the women, who struggled with top player Natallia Pintusava out of the singles lineup. Wiecha, who won 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles, was the only Gophers player to win a set in the match.
The NCAA singles and doubles tournament will be held May 23-28 in Athens, Ga. The Gophers men's top doubles team of Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn was selected as one of eight alternates.
