Culture Compass: Psych rock, family strife and mountains

Friday: Temples

The British rock group will be bringing their psychedelic tunes to the Mainroom during their U.S. tour, which ends at Bonnaroo. They released the album, “Sun Structures,” in 2014 and have done scads of touring since then. Just a little over a year ago, they stopped by Minnesota for a show at the Turf Club, which had to be moved to the Mainroom. This time around, they are joined by Fever the Ghost, Chatham Rise and DJ Jake Rudh.

Where: First Avenue, 701 N. First Ave., Minneapolis

When: 8 p.m. Friday

Cost: $16-18

Saturday: Black Tie

Theater in the Round presents the area premiere of A.R. Gurney’s “Black Tie” from May 29 to June 21. The comedy centers on well-meaning Curtis and his son’s wedding. Curtis strives to create the best toast possible for the rehearsal dinner, but a problem arises. Curtis struggles when he finds that his family doesn’t share his value of tradition. In this one-act show, we’ll find out if he can accept the casual dress code and find the perfect words to say.

Where: Theater in the Round, 245 Cedar Ave., Minneapolis

When: 8 p.m. Saturday

Cost: $22

Sunday: Peter Pan at Children’s Theatre Company

You’re never too old for this classic! Children’s Theatre Company presents the tale as a new-look production, featuring one plot adjustment. CTC dropped the caricatures of Native Americans as seen in the Disney film and other productions. Instead, CTC recreated Tiger Lily and her friends as a group of girls with power complementary to the Lost Boys. Come see the tale of magic and nostalgia, now with gender equality and more.

Where: Children’s Theatre Company, 2400 S. Third Ave., Minneapolis

When: 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday

Cost: $10-80

CULTURE TO CONSUME

Listen to this: “The Way You’d Love Her”

The indie rock genius Mac Demarco dropped his newest single, “The Way You’d Love Her,” earlier this month. If you haven’t had a chance yet — or perhaps you’re just getting acquainted with Demarco — waste no time on looking up this tune. The peaceful, sunny yet sentimental tune fits the end of May perfectly. The track previews his new EP, “Another One,” due August 7

Watch this: “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea”

In this six-episode documentary series filmed over more than six years for PBS, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan take viewers across America’s best sites. Each episode highlights the views and histories of parks like Acadia, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and more. When you’re done, consider visiting one yourself. The film will give you all the knowledge necessary to make the most out of the trip!

Read this: “Welcome to the Monkey House”

Whether you’ve abandoned textbooks for the summer or you’re still taking classes, everyone could use a little bit of fiction. If you can’t supply the dedication required to complete a novel, short stories are an excellent substitute. Why not start with the very best? In “Welcome to the Monkey House,” mastermind Kurt Vonnegut gives us 23 short stories and one essay — each with a powerful, clever ending.
