An Augsburg student was killed Monday while walking home after a volunteering shift in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Ahmednur Ali, 20 , was leading word processing classes and assisting seniors and youth with job applications at the Brian Coyle Community Center shortly before he was shot, Salma Hussein , a member of the UniversityâÄôs Somali Student Association , said. Ali and Hussein had the same volunteer orientation last Friday and this was AliâÄôs first official shift at the community center. Hussein said whoever shot him âÄúpicked the wrong personâÄù because he was âÄúdoing great thingsâÄù in his community. Minneapolis police responded to a reported shooting shortly after 5 p.m. Monday at 420 15th Ave. SE âÄî near Currie Park and between the University’s West Bank campus and the Metrodome âÄî where they found Ali with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center who knew the Augsburg junior and his father, said no one would have had a reason to kill Ali. âÄúIf [community members] learn anything from yesterdayâÄôs killing itâÄôs that none of them are safe anymore,” he said. Hussein said all members of the University Somali Student Association returned to the scene of the shooting around 8 p.m. Monday and attended an on-scene lecture by a St. Paul Imam âÄî a community Islamic leader âÄî stressing non-violence. Paul Pribbenow, Augsburg’s president, said in a news release that the school community’s prayers were with Ali’s family. Augsburg held a Tuesday morning gathering at Foss Chapel in memory of Ali. There are no suspects in custody, and police are investigating. Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said they are looking at surveillance cameras in the area to see if any part of the incident was caught on tape.
