Police request more funds for TCF Bank Stadium concerts

The Minneapolis Police Department might provide K-9 and bomb units at three high-profile concerts at TCF Bank Stadium this summer.

The Minneapolis City Council approved over $11,000 Friday for the additional security. Final approval for extra police presence at the Rolling Stones, One Direction and Luke Bryan concerts this summer will come from Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges.

The security measures are new to summer concerts, though the police department has received funding for K-9 and bomb units at Gophers football games since 2009. The University’s Athletic Department gave about $20,000 to MPD for added security during last year’s football season.

The University of Minnesota Police Department uses its own K-9 unit in addition to those from MPD for athletic events, said UMPD’s Deputy Chief Chuck Miner.

He said the University doesn’t employ its own bomb squad.
