Gas leak causes U-buildings to evacuate for short time

Three University of Minnesota East Bank campus buildings were shut down Wednesday morning after construction workers hit a four-inch gas pipe, causing a leak.

University officials sent a text message alerting the campus community to steer clear of Nicholson, Eddy and Jones Halls at about 8:00 a.m. The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to a 911 call from the construction workers, according to University spokesman Tim Busse, and evacuated everyone from the buildings.

Because of windy weather conditions, the gas didn’t have a chance to build-up, Busse said.

CenterPoint Energy fixed the leak, and another alert was released about an hour later, clearing the buildings for regular access.
