University of Minnesota crews reopened the Southeast Steam Plant Thursday returning heat to campus buildings.

Crews identified the problems in steam tunnels and were able to fix them after Interim Vice President for University Services Mike Berthelsen said in a campus-wide email Thursday that some buildings on campus were in danger of losing heat after a damaged pipeline forced the University to close its Southeast Steam Plant.

The new Main Energy Plant — currently in a testing phase — stayed operational. The University diverted steam to “critical” buildings like the University of Minnesota Medical Center and research areas during the closure, according to the email.
