Freshman Shane Wiskus represented the Gophers in the Winter Cup Challenge and by the end of the meet, he was asked to join another gymnastics team.
Wiskus was named to the U.S. Senior National Team and will compete at the 2018 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Boston Aug. 16-19 after his performance in the meet, which ended on Saturday. Wiskus finished ninth at the Winter Cup, receiving a score of 162.900.
Head coach Mike Burns was impressed with Wiskus' performance.
"He had a little setback on his vault, but he came back like a lion roaring in the jungle. It was unbelievable," Burns said. "He went on a tear after that. He did the job out there and impressed the powers that be."
Wiskus' best event was floor. He finished with a combined score of 28.550. He also finished fourth in high bars, fifth in parallel bars and sixth in still rings.
Senior Tristan Duran finished 15th overall, receiving a score of 155.700. His best event was parallel bars. He received a two-day score of 27.200 and finished 10th in that event.
Burns said Duran had a tough start to the tournament because he was sick and had to leave during the first day of competition.
"He was behind the eight-ball from a health standpoint, but he never gave up," Burns said. "He kept fighting and did a great job."
Junior Shaun Herzog finished sixth on vault, receiving a two-day score of 28.500.
Jalon Stephens competed in four events, scoring 46.850 in total. He did not make the finals.
Duran, Herzog, Stephens and Wiskus will join the rest of their teammates as Minnesota's team schedule resumes. The Gophers' next meet is Saturday against Penn State at 3 p.m.
Burns said the rest of the team will continue to train for Saturday's matchup against Penn State.
"We modified how we handled the week. We continued to do routines in the course of our training," Burns said. "We certainly didn't give them a vacation."
