Culture compass: FAM Fridays, The Greeting Committee and “Is God Is”

Friday: FWMN at FAM Fridays

FAM Fridays brings fashion, art and music to one convenient location every Friday night. It’s a fun opportunity to shop around some pop-up shops from local fashion designers and artists, as well as listen to great music. In case you needed another reason to go other than the fact that this event is free, Fashion Week is wrapping up on Sept. 30. Get in the spirit while you can.

Where: Radisson Red, 609 S. 3rd St., Minneapolis

When: 8 p.m. to midnight

Cost: Free

Saturday: “Is God Is”

“Is God Is” presents a story of vengeance and morals peppered with comedy and drama. Twin sisters survive a tragic fire and find out their mother, whom they believed had died, is still alive and wishes to see them. What follows is a revenge story that isn’t a classic revenge story. It’s passionate and presents issues of racial inequality and socioeconomic division. The play runs through Oct. 14.

Where: Mixed Blood Theatre, 1501 4th St. S., Minneapolis

When: 7:30 p.m.

Cost: Free first-come, first-serve; $35 for guaranteed seating

Sunday: Open Streets Minneapolis

Open Streets Minneapolis will be heading to the University area on Sept. 30, giving the public an opportunity to reclaim the streets and shop locally. Almost every vendor at the street festival is a business or organization that is housed within five blocks of the route. Our Streets Minneapolis encourages people to walk, bike and have fun while exploring the community around them.

Where: 14th Ave. SE., University Ave. SE. and Oak St. SE.

When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost: FREE

CULTURE TO CONSUME

Listen to this: “17” by The Greeting Committee

The Greeting Committee is the type of band that makes your heart feel light and your toes feel like tapping. They’re possibly one of the most feel-good bands out there, with the exception of a few incredible ballads. The band released the song “17” this past spring, and it easily became the indie-pop song of the summer for many. If you’re feeling a bit reminiscent of warmer days, this song is for you.

Eat this: Trader Joe’s Petite Pumpkin Spice Cookies

These little shortbread cookies taste like a bite of autumn in a box. They have the perfect amount of pumpkin spice and to really knock your socks off, they have a yogurt coating with sprinkles. The pumpkin-shaped cookies are dangerously addicting but pair great with your choice of tea and a Netflix binge on a chilly evening.

Wear this: Good Chemistry perfume

Target launched a brand of perfume called Good Chemistry this past winter. The perfumes are vegan, paraben-free and made with essential oils. They come in three different forms: body mist, rollerball and classic perfume, so you can easily fit them into your lifestyle. Our personal favorite? The fresh and subtly sweet magnolia violet scent.
