Culture compass: Non-Homecoming-related fun

Friday: Free October Improv Show

Not looking to buy tickets for the Steve Aoki show on Friday? That’s okay, because Minnesota Long-Form Improv will be hosting their first show of the semester just down the street from the concert. In the Bell Auditorium on East Bank, you’ll be able to see some of the University’s most talented improv comedians. Best of all, the show is free.

Where: 10 Church St. SE., Minneapolis

When: 7 to 9 p.m.

Cost: Free

Saturday: Gods and Monsters Art Show 2018

At the Gods and Monsters Art Show, you can see over 100 artists’ depictions of things that go bump in the night — mythological creatures, vampires, movie monsters and more are all welcome. You can also sip potions from local breweries, grab a bite to eat from a food truck or have your tarot cards read.

Where: Artspace Jackson Flats, 901 18 1/2 Ave. NE., Minneapolis

When: 6 to 11 p.m.

Cost: Suggested $2 donation

Sunday: “The Craft:” Drag Dinner

Flip Phone has done it again — this weekend’s drag dinner is centered around the campy 1996 film “The Craft.” If you haven’t been lucky enough to see the cult classic, check it out before the drag dinner. Four teenage girls dabbling in witchcraft? Sounds like perfect Halloween fun to us.

Where: Union Rooftop, 731 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis

When: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $11 cover charge

CULTURE TO CONSUME

Follow this: @basically

Basically is Bon Appetit’s resource for beginners, and even the most seasoned chefs will appreciate their helpful recipes. The site is currently in the middle of its Basically 10×10 series — for 10 weeks, they’ll release a super simple weekly recipe to get you back in the kitchen. Think roasted broccoli with tahini sauce or spaghetti pomodoro with a homemade tomato sauce.

Watch this: “Internetting with Amanda Hess”

This New York Times-produced video series takes a deep dive into the biggest trends on the Internet. Hosted by reporter and critic Amanda Hess, the series has covered everything from the Internet’s war over cats and dogs to unboxing videos. The editing is fun and flashy, but the commentary from Hess is deeply insightful.

Sport this: Your school spirit

You might have back-to-back plans this weekend, or you might be trying to escape the madness. But Homecoming only comes once a year, so rep your school spirit — in whatever way you’d like. This might mean cheering at the football game … or just wearing a maroon sweater.
