he University's Center for Outdoor Adventure provides day, weekend and extended trips to a variety of locations featuring several athletic activities.
Last Friday, 11 participants, including University students and members of the public, plus four student leaders, traveled north to take part in the Fall Colors Backpacking trip along the Superior Hiking Trail, which stretches from Two Harbors to the Canadian border.
The participants hiked an 11-mile stretch from Silver Bay to Tettegouche State Park, one of the most challenging sections of the trail that goes along the North Shore.
Splitting into two hiking groups, the participants
each took a van Saturday morning and drove from their campsite in Tettegouche State Park to either end of the trail and began hiking away from civilization.
Ranging from the lakeshore altitude of 620 feet above
sea level and climbing to a peak of 1,829 feet, more than 1,200 feet above the great lake, the trail affords stunning views of Lake Superior and the inland bluffs.
After one day on the trail, the groups met in the middle and exchanged car keys before making camp for the night. They continued hiking Sunday morning before returning home.
From the start of the
semester until the end of
winter break, there are 22 outdoor trips on the center's schedule.
