Two retired New York City Police Department detectives said they've discovered evidence that links the murder of University student Chris Jenkins in 2003 to more than 40 other disappearances of college-age people around the country in the last 10 years, according to a KSTP report.
The former detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte , visited the site of each of the 40 disappearances.. At many of the sites, they discovered graffiti consisting of a smiley face.
The disappearances might be the result of a "serial killer," Duarte said in the KSTP report.
Gannon and Duarte turned over all evidence to the Minneapolis Police Department and Hennepin County prosecutors, although they've yet to file charges in the case.
University student Chris Jenkins was last seen Oct. 31, 2002 outside a downtown Minneapolis bar. His body was found in the Mississippi River in February 2003.
Police originally labeled the cause of death as unknown, but redefined it as a homicide in November 2006.
