What to do this weekend: Fashion edition

Looking for something to do this Valentine’s Day weekend other than sitting around in your pajamas, eating Oreos and watching romantic comedies? Luckily, this weekend happens to be the Twin Cities “Fashion Weekend” (as I like to call it). There are fashion shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday so you won’t even have time to mope about being single. Besides, getting all dolled up and posting Instagram selfies is a great way to feel better about your current relationship status.

Black Hearts Ball

Friday night the Black Hearts Ball gives you an opportunity to get dressed up in semi-formal attire and act sophisticated. The event, hosted by Minneapolis-based design duo Tim + Thom, combines fashion, art, opera, orchestra and theater into one classy soiree. Seven Minnesota designers will be showing looks accompanied with classical vocalist or orchestral arrangement.

When: Friday, February 14, 2014. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m.

Where: Minneapolis Club, 729 2nd Ave., Minneapolis

Tickets: $20 are for general admission and can be purchased online.

Age: 21+

Align

Saturday night’s festivities take place on the University of Minnesota Campus, specifically Rapson Hall, where 20 apparel design seniors will be showing their final collections. Each designer has a unique aesthetic. There will be a little bit of everything at Align, from childrenswear, to bridal, to women’s ready-to-wear.

When: Saturday, February 15, 2014. 5:30 p.m. & 8 p.m.

Where: Rapson Hall, 89 Church St. S.E., Minneapolis

Tickets: $10 for students and they can be purchased online or at the door.

Red Dress Collection

Sunday’s runway show features local “celebrities” — Mall of America’s trend specialist Sara Rogers, freelance stylist Jahna Peloquin and Mpls-St. Paul Magazine’s Style Editor Allison Kaplan, just to name a few — who will be modeling original red dresses from some of the area’s top designers.   Christopher Straub, Samantha Rei and Caroline Hayden are just some of the local talents who will be showing designs. All of the proceeds of the Red Dress Collection event will benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women program.

When: Sunday, February 16, 2014. Doors open at 6 p.m., runway show starts at 8 p.m.

Where: Graves 601 Hotel Ballroom, 601 1st Av. N., Minneapolis, Minn.

Tickets: General admission tickets cost $25 online and $35 at the door.
