Minneapolis police to rehire laid-off officers

Minneapolis police plan to rehire nine officers who were laid off after graduating the academy in 2009, according to MPR.

The department can afford to rehire the officers after “recent positive budget developments,” because of retiring, high-paid officers and being under budget for the year.

The recruits are part of a 20-recruit class that graduated in 2009.

That year the city had to lay off 25 officers because it was unable to pay their salaries but soon after, with federal money, it was able to rehire 13. Funds from another city department were used to hire two more and the city rehired another officer earlier this year.

One of nine officers will not return immediately because he is serving in Iraq and another may not return after finding other work.
