University begins 2014 bonding requests

The University of Minnesota has started funding requests for some key construction projects.

The Minnesota Management and Budget Office released the University's preliminary capital budget request on Monday, in which the school requested $232.7 million for next year's bonding bill.

A large bonding bill failed in this spring's session, leaving about $110 million in University construction projects unfunded. A smaller bonding bill passed later this session, providing mostly funding to renovate the state Capitol.

The preliminary request could increase before the 2014 legislative session begins. University Chief Financial Officer Richard Pfutzenreuter previously told the Minnesota Daily that "unmet needs" from the recent failed bonding bill will go into the 2014 request, but the preliminary request doesn't include everything that was left unfunded this session.

The University is one of many institutions to file preliminary requests. Minnesota Public Radio reports about $2.8 billion in bonding bill requests have been filed so far.
