University of Minnesota alum allowed to travel after arrest in Thailand

By Katie Bogensberger

A former University of Minnesota student who was detained in Thailand has been given permission to leave the country until a Sept. 17 bail renewal hearing, the Star Tribune reported Tuesday.

Anthony Kwan was arrested in a Bangkok airport Aug. 23 for possession of body armor. Kwan was covering a recent bombing in the city when he was arrested.

An article from The Sun Daily, an English-language Malaysian newspaper, said Kwan has no plans to leave the country so far because he needs to discuss his situation with his lawyer and company.

Although a Thai court released Kwan, his charges have not been dropped according to the Star Tribune. Thai law requires a license to carry body armor, the article said.

Vice president and spokesman of the Thai Journalists Association Manop Thiposod said the Thai police and military are willing to allow journalists to use flak jackets when in violent areas, the Star Tribune reported. Thiposod said Thai journalists did not think body armor was necessary covering the aftermath of the Aug. 17 bombing, according to the Star Tribune.

Kwan studied aerospace engineering at the University of Minnesota and was a photographer for the Minnesota Daily.
