Indiana’s Zeller skips on NBA draft, returns to Hoosiers

The other Big Ten co-Freshman of the Year, Indiana’s Cody Zeller, announced Tuesday that he intends to return for his sophomore season – making the Hoosiers a likely preseason top-five team.

Zeller, a freshman standout at forward in his first college season, averaged 15.6 points per game, shooting a remarkable 62 percent from the field while leading his team to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed.

The run ended when Zeller hit a brick wall and eventual national champion – the Kentucky Wildcats – in the round of the Sweet 16.

This comes at a time when Minnesota is still waiting on Trevor Mbakwe, who was recently granted a sixth year of eligibility, to make a decision on his possible return. Chip Armelin announced he is transferring on Monday, freeing up a scholarship for Mbakwe – if he takes it.

Underclassmen have until April 29 to declare for the NBA Draft, but the NCAA set a new policy that requires student-athletes to decide if they'll return to school earlier.

"The new draft rule, which is not universally known, calls for all underclassmen to indicate whether they're in or out of the NBA draft on April 10, one week after the Final Four ends and a day before the month-long spring signing period." Andy Katz of ESPN.com wrote.
