Halftime Report: Gophers trail Michigan State 7-3

Minnesota's defense looked suspect to open the half, giving up 80 yards on just seven plays. Michigan State running back Jeremy Langford capped off the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead.

Then Ra'Shede Hageman showed why he's projected as a first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The senior defensive lineman threw aside a blocker on 4th and 1 to turn the Spartans over on downs. Later on, Hageman deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage to force Michigan State to punt.

Since their opening touchdown, the Spartans haven't scored. The Gophers haven't been much better on offense.

Philip Nelson has thrown two interceptions as Minnesota's only points have come from a 21-yard field goal. Nelson's completed three passes for 22 yards, while running back David Cobb has paced the Gophers with 53 rushing yards.

Donovahn Jones' lone reception of the half came one-handed with standout defensive back Darqueze Dennard draped all over him. The true freshman receiver is expected to have a bigger role in the offense after Derrick Engel's season-ending injury.

Michigan State will start the second half with the ball.
