Reid Travis passes on Gophers, picks Stanford

Five-star 2014 forward Reid Travis said he went back-and-forth on his college choice over the past two weeks.

And when it came time to announce his final decision on Friday, it was Stanford, not Minnesota, where he chose to take his talents next season.

“I just felt at home and comfortable there,” Travis said.

Travis is a 6-foot-8-inch, 240-pound forward at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis. His final three schools were Duke, Stanford and the Gophers.

Travis said he has no “bad blood” toward Minnesota.

“I really do love [Pitino] as a person and all his assistant coaches. I have nothing bad to say about them,” Travis said. “They’re a class A project.”

Pitino had the disadvantage of starting the recruiting process when he got the job in April. Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins had been recruiting Travis since his freshman year — which meant something to the DeLaSalle forward.

“It got to the point last year where it wasn’t even like [Dawkins] was recruiting me anymore,” Travis said. “It was like I was talking to a family member. He was just checking in on me.”

The decision was up in the air to just about everyone. Even Rene Pulley, the director of Travis’ AAU team Howard Pulley, thought the forward was Minnesota-bound.

But Travis said the decision finally hit him in the head last night — it was the Cardinal.

“At the end of the day, I just felt like [Stanford] was my calling,” he said.
