Two days ago, Pam Borton said crazy things can happen in the college basketball world once the calendar hits March. Her words rang true Thursday night as the Gophers pulled out a 74-68 overtime victory against Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Minnesota trailed the whole game until Rachel Banham netted a deep three-pointer to tie it up at 61. The Gophers knew their season could be over with a loss and they played desperate in the final minutes.
"In the second half we just fought back," Banham told Big Ten Network after the game. "In overtime we wanted it more."
Banham led the Gophers in scoring, but shot just 5-22 from the field. Amanda Zahui B. tallied 19 rebounds.
Minnesota will play Nebraska tomorrow night in the quarterfinals of the tournament. It will be a chance for the Gophers to garner a signature win and cement their spot in the NCAA Tournament. Borton thinks Minnesota is already in, but its bubble almost burst Thursday night.
"I think it's a pretty great shot that we're in. We've won seven of our last nine games," Borton told Big Ten Network.
