Rutgers releases Nelson; second suspect found

Former Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson has been dismissed from Rutgers, head coach Kyle Flood announced in a release.

Nelson was arrested early Sunday morning in Mankato, Minn., after an incident that left Isaac Kolstad, a former linebacker at Minnesota State-Mankato, in critical condition. He was charged with first and third-degree assault yesterday and released on $20,000 bail.

"The Rutgers football family's thoughts and prayers are with Isaac Kolstad and his family," Flood said in the release.

Nelson transfered from Minnesota after playing two seasons for the Gophers. He participated in spring practices with Rutgers but had not played a game for the Scarlet Knights.

Additionally, a second suspect has been arrested, per the Star Tribune. The second suspect fled, but multiple witnesses recognized Nelson, who was arrested near the scene.

According to the criminal complaint, the second suspect allegedly punched Kolstad in the head causing Kolstad to go limp and collapse. Then, Nelson allegedly kicked Kolstad in the head at least once.

Kolstad's father, Blaine, wrote on Sunday on caringbridge.org that his son was "fighting for his life."
