This week in Gophers sports: July 20-27

Janzen helps lead Team USA to victory Former Gophers swimmer Kiera Janzen participated in the Pan American Games in Toronto July 14-18. The six-time All-American swam in three events at the games: the 200m Freestyle, the 400m Freestyle and the 4x200m relay. Janzen took 6th and 5th in the Freestyle meets, the 200m and 400m, respectively, but had an exciting run in the relay. The relay team including Janzen won the race and a gold medal. In addition to winning gold, the team beat the previous Pan Am relay record by seven seconds with a time of 7:54.32. Both the men’s and women’s teams ended with 32 swimming medals total, putting them in first place at the end of events at the games. Glen Perkins closes All Star Game Twins reliever and former Minnesota pitcher Glen Perkins closed the MLB All Star game for the second year on July 14. Perkins threw nine pitches for the American League in the ninth inning and allowed one run, but three strikes. Perkins’ American League won the game 6-3. Gophers sign two centers Coach Marlene Stollings announced July 17 that the women’s basketball team would be adding two centers to their roster for the 2015-2016 season. Annalese Lamke comes to the Gophers from Galesville, Wis., a No. 49-ranked center by ESPN. Jessie Edwards is a foreign addition from Leeming, Australia. Edwards has spent the past season with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns in the State Basketball League of Western Australia, where she has averaged 16 points per game.
