Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison arrested on National Mall

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, DFL-Minneapolis, was arrested Tuesday during a protest on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Ellison sat down on Independence Avenue with other members of Congress during the march toward the Capitol, according to the Star Tribune.  He was arrested at about 4 p.m., they reported.

Six other U.S. Representatives were arrested at the march, including Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) who also participated in the March on Washington in 1963, according to KSMP-TV.

The rally, officially named "Camino Americano," was held to promote an overhaul of immigration policy by the end of the year, including allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for citizenship.

The National Mall is closed due to the government shutdown, but the National Park Service allowed the rally because it was protected by the First Amendment, an event spokeswoman told Politico.

Ellison's office called his arrest an act of "civil disobedience."
