The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) are being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate respectively as means of enforcing copyright law online and reduce the spread of piracy. Critics have argued the measures would harm free speech and the fair use of online content.
Google is among several websites protesting the Hollywood-backed legislation. Wikipedia, Reddit and others are staging planned all-day blackouts Wednesday.
The Obama Administration has stated its opposition to SOPA and PIPA in blog response to an online petition.
The House has since announced the planned vote on SOPA would be indefinitely delayed.
A vote on PIPA in the Senate is still scheduled for Jan. 24.
