Minneapolis, St. Paul consider new streetcar lines

Street cars might be coming back to the Twin Cities. Minneapolis and St. Paul will conduct a yearlong study to examine the benefits of adding streetcars to the Central Corridor light-rail line, according to the Star Tribune. The study would look at economic and social benefits, as well as ridership and cost. The purposed line would run on Central and Nicollet Avenues, and connect to the light-rail and buses to reach suburban areas. City officials believe adding the streetcar lines will benefit local businesses and help make jobs in the city more accessible to suburbanites.

Several U.S. cities have been given federal grants to build streetcar lines since 2010. The funding for this study also comes from a federal grant, along with additional local funding.
