Prize-winning journalist Anthony Shadid dead at 43

 

Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times journalist Anthony Shadid died Thursday in Syria while covering the country's uprising, his paper reported. He was 43.
 
His career was characterized by striving to capture the untold stories of the Middle East while covering conflicts from Iraq to Libya.
 
In 2002, Shadid was shot in the West Bank. Last year, he was kidnapped for six days in Libya. After surviving many ordeals in the line of duty, he died of an asthma attack in Syria.
 
Shadid and his photographer Tyler Hicks were helped into the country by smugglers through the Turkish border. During the trip, Shadid experienced asthma attacks until he suffered a fatal one.
 
He leaves behind his wife, Nada Bakri and two children. His career included worked for the Associated Press, The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. He won Pulitzer prizes in 2004 and 2010 for his coverage of the Iraq war.
