LONDON – Student studying abroad in England through various programs have the opportunity learn about the impact of the Olympic Games and tour its facilities for credit.
The two month course hosted in the depths of City University London has students wander the Olympic villages, facilities and shopping centers that have sprung up in recent years as the games approach. With only 39 days remaining before the torch reaches London, students are allowed a final glimpse at the city's creation before crowds descend upon it.
London’s Olympic Park is located in the East End city of Stratford, part of the economically struggling Borough of Newham. Within the city’s bid to host the games, the United Kingdom listed the rejuvenation of the East End as a primary goal.
Industrial parks in Stratford have since been transformed into green fields and state-of-the-art athletics facilities, including the primary Olympic stadium, an aquatics center, and a velodrome for cycling events. An estimated 70 percent of spectators will pass through Stratford during their time in London
Newham is only one of six East London boroughs transformed by the games. Barking and Dagham, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich also host Olympic facilities.
Construction on the Greenwich equestrian venue continues with just more than a month remaining. London’s revitalized financial district on Canary Warf is set to receive an influx of tourists.
Those enrolled in the three-credit Olympics course are required to write a handful of papers and essays on the issues surrounding London’s preparation and planned legacy for the games.
