A Coon Rapids, Minn. man was sentenced Thursday for stealing prosthetics from a University of Minnesota hospital where he worked and selling them on eBay.

Peter Stasica, a former prosthetics manager at the University Medical Center, Fairview, must pay $89,000 and will serve two years of probation, a United States District Judge ruled.

The U.S. District Attorney charged Stasica with wire fraud in March, claiming he stole prosthetics and supplies from the hospital and sold them online during a six-month period in 2011. Stasica also convinced patients to give them his prosthetics without telling them he planned to sell them.

The Pioneer Press reported some 40 people bought more than 60 prosthetics from Stasica.

The U.S. Attorney had recommended a six-month jail sentence for Stasica, pointing out the former manager's actions "required constant deception rather than a handful of aberrational acts."
