Crowd of 2,000 rallies for immigration reform

Nearly 2,000 people representing Minnesota's business, labor, faith, education and immigrant communities came together Saturday to call on Congress to pass immigration reform, news sources reported.

Rally participants said comprehensive immigration reforms will boost the economy, families and worker rights, the Star Tribune reported.

The crowd formed at the Basilica of St. Mary and marched to the Hennepin County Government Center, Kare 11 reported.

The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan immigration bill in June and now it's time for the House to act, said secretary-treasurer of the Minnesota AFL-CIO Steve Hunter,  the Star Tribune reported.

Hunter said immigration reforms could help meet the demand for workers at various Minnesota companies as more baby boomers retire, the Star Tribune reported.

“We gathered here today,” Hunter said, “because it is time for all workers to be treated equally under the law, to be able to work in safe workplaces free from intimidation, to have wage and hour protections, and the right to organize and collectively bargain over the terms and conditions of employment," the Star Tribune reported.
