Kaler to take Ice Bucket Challenge

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler will take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Saturday during the Gophers game, according to a University press release.

Multiple members of the University community put Kaler up to the challenge, the press release said, including Gophers head football coach Jerry Kill and U.S. Rep. John Kline, R-Minn.

Senior Amber Jones, who was one of Kaler’s challengers, and Minnesota Student Association President Joelle Stangler will dump the ice water on him during the second quarter of the game, according to the press release.

After he’s soaked, Kaler plans to donate some money to the University of Minnesota’s ALS research fund, said University spokeswoman Brooke Dillon.

According to the ALS Association, about 5,600 people nationwide each year are diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It’s estimated that around 30,000 people have the disease across the nation. On average, a person with ALS dies within five years of its onset.
