Hockey coach says UMD violated Title IX

The University of Minnesota-Duluth recently told its women’s hockey team coach Shannon Miller her contract with the school won’t be renewed.

Miller said she believes the decision was made based on her gender, rather than the financial reasons the school reported in December, according to the Star Tribune.

The school is currently trimming $6 million from its budget by, MPR reported.

Miller’s current contract expires after the 2014-2015 season, according to a press release from the school.

The contracts of the team’s two assistant coaches and part-time hockey operations director will not be renewed either, the Globe and Mail reported.

At $207,000 this year, Miller is the highest-paid women’s college hockey coach in the country, according to the Globe and Mail.

Miller, who has won five national championships and is an vocal crusader for her players and sport, isn’t going to leave UMD quietly, the Star Tribune reported.

“I am not going to back down,” Miller told the Star Tribune. “I feel like I’m supposed to be doing this, and I embrace it. Good is going to come of this, for women and for society.”
