Chipotle salmonella infection caused by tomatoes

The source for the salmonella outbreak which sickened Chipotle customers in Minnesota was found to be caused by tomatoes, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journals.

Chipotle has since switched to a different supplier of tomatoes and removed all contaminated products from the stores, the report stated.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported on Thursday that investigators are working to get to the origin of the farm that produced the tomatoes.

A total of 64 cases have been found and 22 locations have been affected since the outbreak, according to the report.

Still, more salmonella cases are expected to be seen in the next few days as it can take up to 10 days for salmonella poisoning to be noticed, according to the Star Tribune.

Two lawsuits have already been filed by customers with one of them being hospitalized, according to the report.
