Lost in the madness of Blake Hoffarber’s miracle shot Friday night at Conseco Fieldhouse was the on-the-money full-court pass launched by teammate Travis Busch. Busch told me after the game that he played football for one day his freshman year at Mounds View High School before breaking his finger and deciding to just stick with basketball.
For that one day, though, Busch said he was the team’s quarterback. He never would need to throw another pass…
Until Friday night.
The last-second miracle play the Gophers pulled off against third-seeded Indiana has to be one of the toughest last-second plays to pull off in team sports. In football, the great last second play is the Hail Mary. Well, Friday’s play was a combination of a Hail Mary pass and catch, mixed with a spinning left-handed floater – as time expired. Not to mention the fact that Busch, who has played sparingly all year and hadn’t played the final six minutes of the game, threw a perfect strike despite running across the baseline with a man in his face and that Hoffarber was able to somehow grab the ball over three Hoosier defenders.
Simply amazing.
It’s one of those plays you don’t expect to see happen 10 feet away from you. You don’t expect to see the team celebrating practically right next to your computer screen, nor a team manager high fiving you out of excitement. You expect to see these types of shots on Sportscenter, but not your University as the team being featured.
Whew.
In other news, Indianapolis Colts coach and U of M graduate, Tony Dungy, is in the stands. He is sitting a few rows behind me; I actually walked right by him before and didn’t even notice he was there – shows where my head is at.
Right now the World’s Smartest Dog (according to Jay Leno) is performing at a halftime of the Wisconsin/Michigan State game. I can’t breathe; I’m still in shock from last night.
If I’m not back, take care and enjoy the game.
