With no goals and only four penalties (three of them going against Minnesota) in the first period, I'm searching for something to talk about right now. Here is one: What the heck is going on?
Oddly, Lucia didn't give the third line another start tonight - instead going with the top-line of Gordon, Wheeler and White. The third line of Lucia, Kaufmann and Flynn had gotten three straight starts coming into tonight - all three were Minnesota wins. But coach Lucia has really shaken up the lines as the period progressed. He's got Howe back up on Wheeler's line, Bostrom with Lucia and Kaufmann, and now White with Fisher and Flynn, which leaves only Carman, Barriball and Hoeffel on the second line untouched.
Okay so going into the second period, Minnesota is being outshot by more than 2-1. The Tigers have 20 shots to the Gophers 9. Minnesota will also open up the second with over a minute of penalty kill remaining.
The Gophers are unofficially in the NCAA tournament as Colgate lost tonight - giving Minnesota a cushion in the PairWise Rankings. The team might have been in trouble had the Gophers lost both tonight and tomorrow night and Colgate won.
Former Gophers forward Kyle Okposo just recorded his first career point for th New York Islanders in the NHL. The St. Paul native assisted on Blake Comeau's first period goal as the Islanders are tied 1-1 with the New Jersey Devils in the second period.
