Men's Hockey: Update

Pioneers lead 2-1 with one to go.
So I guess my first period update didn’t make it on for some reason. Don’t worry nothing happened. All I talked about was that UMD shutout Wisconsin 4-0 to win the women’s National Championship – breaking up a possible three-peat for the Badgers.

The second was a little more action packed. Minnesota struck first when Ryan Flynn tipped a chest-high shot by Stu Bickel from the point in at the 5:39 mark. Flynn hadn’t done much lately, so this is further proof that the Gophers depend on everybody to contribute at any time and don’t have one solid weapon.

But the Pioneers came back just before the halfway point when Gopher-killer Tyler Bozak bounced a centering pass off Cade Fairchild’s skate and past Alex Kangas. The score was Bozak’s 18th of the year and his seventh goal of the year against Minnesota. The freshman has nine points against the Maroon and Gold this year.

And it looked like again we’d go to the third period in a 1-1 tie, but with just over 25 seconds left in the second, Eagan native Tom May slipped a partial breakaway attempt under Kangas to give his team a one goal advantage going into the second intermission. Kangas went for a poke-check on the play which left his five-hole exposed. Anthony Mainai assisted on the goal, which was May’s eighth of the year.

DU extended its lead in shots to 29-21 over the period.

The Gophers haven’t often trailed going into the third period in the past month and I’m fairly certain they have a solid record when scoring first.  The last period should be interesting.

The U.S. Sled Hockey Association showed off its talent in the intermission.  Without knowing much about the sport, I can tell you one thing – it looks like it requires a ton of upper body strength and endurance.  The players have to propel themselves around the ice using just their arms.  Looks like it could be a fun sport to try, I’d definitely watch a game.
